Our clients envisioned a spacious kitchen and addition designed for hosting friends and giving their family a place to connect.
By removing the dividing wall between the kitchen and sitting room and re-imagining the layout, our team created a bright, open space that now connects seamlessly to adjacent living and dining areas.
Natural wood tones, new cabinetry, and expansive countertops gave our clients plenty of space to prepare meals, and host parties. Thoughtful lighting choices like pendant and under-mount lighting, along with an adjacent window, bring lots of light into the kitchen and keep the new kitchen feeling bright and open.
Pendant lighting with brass accents were used throughout the kitchen and addition, complementing the client’s decor. New custom cabinets provided ample storage space, with soft close cabinet hinges and under-mount drawer slides providing a luxury feel.
Mahogany benches wrapped around each side of the addition, providing seating and hosting space. As an added bonus, hidden storage space was built into each bench, with soft close hinges added for ease of use.
“The clients were delightful to work with. They had great ideas and saved photos to start our creative process.
We were able to establish a blended style by selecting rich mahogany wood finishes, subtle brass details, and an intricate floor tile detail in the addition as a center focal point.”
Power strips were mounted underneath each cabinet upper for easy plugin access for their countertop appliances. This also allowed us to carry the tile backsplash across the entire wall without cutting outlets into it.
Our clients lived in the home during construction, so thorough dust containment and site protection was a high priority. Large plywood walls and plastic zip walls were utilized during construction to separate the work areas from the rest of the home.
We also took care to ensure their beloved cats were kept inside the home and out of harms way. We purchased cat-calming wall plugins and discussed access with all subcontractors and team members to ensure they were mindful and kept doors shut while working.
Our clients were thrilled with their home’s transformation, and threw us a party to celebrate after closing out construction. Making relationships with wonderful clients like these is a big part of why we all love what we do, and we were grateful for their kindness and hospitality.
Some thoughtful design details in the kitchen included:
A countertop area at the left end of the kitchen, adjacent to the garage. This area gave our clients a convenient place to drop keys and plug in electronics after coming in from the garage. This also became the home for their smart home devices.
A wine rack built into the cabinetry. Our clients wanted easy access to wine for cooking and hosting, so we used the space below the end of the countertop peninsula for a 5 bottle wine storage rack.
Custom cabinetry with soft close hinges, under-mount drawer slides, and dovetail drawer boxes created a luxury feel.
Pendant lighting with brass accents was used to match the brass decor used in the adjacent living spaces.
Storage space over the kitchen sink for easy access to cookbooks and cooking implements.
A countertop mounted air switch for the garbage disposal, keeping the tile backsplash free of outlets and switches.
“This was our first project under the new Washington Energy Code, making it a valuable learning experience as we worked to engineer the building science and calculations needed to meet the new energy point requirements.
The clients were incredibly hospitable and kind throughout the entire process. At the end, they even hosted a celebration meal for the whole team, which made for a truly wonderful evening.”
